NDP MP Pat Martin In the House of Commons on February 22nd, 2000 Re The Bronfman Family

"Mr. Speaker, if a working person owes Revenue Canada $100 it will hound the person to the ends of the earth to make him or her pay up. Yet, when the Bronfman family moved $2.2 billion out of the country without paying a nickel in capital gains tax, the federal government did not seem interested. It has not lifted a finger to try to collect as much as $750 million in back taxes that this wealthy family avoided paying, and time is running out. If it does not act soon it will not be able to collect at all.

Thank goodness a private citizen from Winnipeg, George Harris, is taking this matter to court. George speaks for all Canadians when he argues that we could all pay a little less taxes if the extremely wealthy paid their fair share.

Why is the government not trying to collect those taxes from the Bronfman family? Why is it spending a fortune in legal fees trying to make sure that this case is never heard in court?

Best wishes to Winnipegger George Harris in federal court on March 9. George is fighting a fight for tax fairness for all of us."

Can't wait to see the media question Justin Trudeau's choice as head of Liberal Party fundraising, Stephen Bronfman, of the billionaire Bronfman family. You know, the same media that questioned Stephen Harper choosing Nigel Wright because of his financial wealth?

I was going to say I rarely agree with pat Martin, but the fact is,I NEVER agree with Pat Martin, until now.

The Bronfmans were allowed to circumvent the law and move 2 billion dollars to the Bahamas, and Brian Mulroney was the PM at the time.

Liberal or Conservative, they all answer to the same small group in Canada.and I don't mean the great unwashed.

Sad part is they were denied the request and then had it approved on the Same day. The person who allowed the exemption left his job immediately following the deadline for the government to overturn the exemption. He then was hired by the, wait for it, bronfman family.

DMorris: Chretien was the Prime Minister from 93 - 03.

Yes he was,Wayne, but the Bronfmans transferred their two billion in 1991, when that other Liberal/Conservative guy,Brian Mulroney was PM.

Canada is ruled by an elite that has elected every Prime Minister since Confederation. As communications have improved, as in the internet,it has become much easier to track the activities of the politicians who aspire to the PM's Office.

All PM's since Pearson at one time worked for or were financially backed by Paul Desmarais and Power Corporation.

The string ended with Harper,at least as far as I know.

Mulroney only joined the Conservative Party when he first left home to go to college, because the Liberal club on campus was poorly organized and in disarray. Brian joined the Conservatives after checking out the Liberals, so much for principles.

I agree, it has been a very tight club for a long time. That is a large part of why they hate Harper or the idea that Ontario/Quebec no longer control all the strings.

I was unaware of when the transfer by the Bronfmans was made.

It probably cost them a couple of million in political contributions (and who knows how many positions on various boards) to save a couple of hundred million dollars.
